35 Reasons to be Optimistic About the Midwest
Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin: the blue wave is coming your way.
It’s time for our biggest round of endorsements yet! The Midwest is home to a lot of things: the automobile industry; several key swing states; and 35 Flippable candidates running for state-level office in Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.
Our candidates know all too well that the stakes are high in their states. They’re ready to end bad government policies, pass progressive legislation, and uphold democratic values.
Here’s how flipping state chambers will help our candidates make an impact:
Bringing Good Government to Michigan

Michigan is a prime example of the human cost of bad state government. After flipping the governorship and state House in the 2010 midterms, Republicans used their trifecta to enact several harmful measures. These include extremely gerrymandered maps, a right-to-work law that has devastated unions, and Governor Rick Snyder’s appointment of an emergency manager for the city of Flint (which kicked off the events that caused Flint’s water crisis).
Our 18 candidates want to put an end to the destructive policies coming out of Lansing. By helping them flip the state House and state Senate, we can get Michiganders the good government they deserve.
Laying the Groundwork in Minnesota

Minnesota proves how difficult it is to pass laws in a purple state. The Republican-controlled legislature has blocked several progressive proposals — including a sexual harassment bill and stricter gun control (despite public support for the latter). But Republican lawmakers don’t just block, they also attack: the GOP gubernatorial nominee supports voter ID requirements even though Minnesota voters rejected a proposed voter ID law in 2012.
Flipping the Minnesota State House will make it easier for Democrats to pass progressive laws, and it will bring Minnesota closer to securing a Democratic trifecta by 2020, which is crucial for enshrining good policies for years to come. Our 13 candidates are up for the job: they want to end gridlock and get laws that reflect the will of Minnesotans on the books.
Restoring Democracy in Wisconsin

Wisconsin shows us what happens when politicians value party over people. After winning a trifecta in the 2010 midterms, Republicans took drastic steps to protect their power. Lawmakers passed a strict voter ID law, which notably prevented 300,000 eligible voters from voting in the 2016 presidential election, and they drew heavily gerrymandered maps that have given the GOP significant advantages in state and congressional races.
But after Democratic victories in two special elections (including previously endorsed Caleb Frostman), Wisconsin is now within reach for Democrats. Our four candidates are ready to flip the state Senate and give Wisconsinites back their voice.
