We’re coming together to tackle all of the races we need to win to build a better democracy.

It’s been an eventful and exciting year so far at Flippable. We supported Pennsylvania State Senator Pam Iovino, who flipped her district — and made the path to a Democratic majority in the State Senate even shorter, with just three seats to flip in 2020. We kicked off Flip It Fair, our campaign to flip Virginia’s General Assembly in 2019.

And today, we’re announcing our biggest news of the year: We are joining the Swing Left family to multiply our impact in the states and deliver a winning strategy for 2020.

Flippable and the Swing Left family in Madison, Wisconsin.

Last year, we worked alongside Swing Left as they tackled winning back the House and we tackled flipping state legislatures. We collaborated on volunteer initiatives and launched a joint newsletter that featured strategic ways to make an impact, up and down the ballot.

Along the way, we learned a great deal from each other. Swing Left had made political action simple, local, and high-impact, getting hundreds of thousands of people involved for the first time and raising $11M to flip the House. Flippable made political action more strategic, zeroing in on the under-resourced state districts we needed to flip for a fair democracy.

“…with this transition, we’re preparing to scale our focus on states and take pro-democracy work to new heights.”

After the midterms, our two organizations met to talk about what we’d learned from our communities, what the next big challenges were, and what our movement needed. We traded notes on our complementarities: how to play in up- and down-ballot races, how to make political action both inviting and data-driven.

And we marveled at what we could accomplish by combining our brain power. Together, we could create a single, simple entry point for anyone eager to get involved in the 2020 elections. We could quantify and show the impact of investing in a portfolio of down-ballot races. We could flip the seats we needed to win in 2020, from state houses to the White House.

At some point, the conversation shifted from what we “could” do to what we “should” do. It was striking how high the stakes were: the 2020 election cycle would be our last chance to shift the balance of power in the states before redistricting. This election would decide the future of our democracy.

The next step was obvious:

To be clear, we’re still committed to flipping Virginia blue this November — and we’re announcing more candidate endorsements next month. The new Swing Left Flippable States Fund will support this work, as will any contributions to the existing Flippable Fund.

But with this transition, we’re preparing to scale our focus on states and take pro-democracy work to new heights. Thank you for helping us build a stronger movement, and we can’t wait to do more with you.
