Florida’s GOP-controlled legislature passes laws that affect us all — on climate change, immigration, and voting.

We’re pleased to announce our endorsement of Annette Taddeo, the Democratic nominee for Florida’s 40th State Senate District. Taddeo was elected in a primary election last night, by a clear 71–29 margin. She goes on to face Republican challenger Jose Felix Diaz in a special election on September 26.

Introducing Annette

We’re excited to support a candidate who represents the best of what our progressive movement — and America — has to offer. Born in Colombia, Annette moved to Florida at 17, pursued higher education in Alabama, and started her own successful translation business (named one of Florida’s top 100 small businesses).

Annette Taddeo is a community leader who will strengthen the safety net in Miami.

Along the way, Annette faced her share of hardships. In 1992, Hurricane Andrew ravaged South Florida and destroyed Annette’s parents’ home. Annette and her parents lived in an RV for months, during which time she helped her neighbors and parents slowly rebuild. She saw how precarious life can become during a natural disaster: how savings and assets are often wiped out, how families struggle to recover. She came away with the deep desire to strengthen the safety net and a calling to serve her community.

Annette ran as gubernatorial candidate Charlie Crist’s running mate in 2014, and after a hard-fought campaign they lost to Republican Rick Scott by just 1%. She comes to this race a seasoned candidate with a network of fired-up supporters.

As State Senator for the 40th District, Annette will work to expand healthcare coverage, protect Florida’s natural resources, and invest in public schools. By electing this well-respected community leader, we can take our first step toward flipping Florida’s state government.

Support Annette today and join the fight to flip Florida blue!

Why Florida

We all know how crucial a role Florida plays in presidential elections. Al Gore’s defeat in 2000 came down to a few hanging chads — and many see Trump’s win in Florida as the first indication of his victory nationwide.

In national elections, Florida may be the swingiest of swing states. But in both chambers of its state legislature, Florida is still dominated by Republicans. This trend — which we see in many purple states — is largely the result of unfair redistricting that benefits Republicans. Gerrymandering has given Florida’s GOP as many as 3 extra seats in Congress, as well as a built-in advantage in all state legislative races.

Florida’s state legislature is still dominated by Republicans.

After a ten-year process to secure fair districts at the state level, Florida drew new district lines in 2015. But Republicans still hold a six-seat majority in the State Senate and a 20-seat majority in the State House of Representatives.

With control of all three branches of state government, Florida Republicans have passed the most extreme voter suppression laws in the country. In 2012, Florida’s Republican governor and party chairman even admitted that the state’s voter ID law was designed to deter Democratic voters. Because the state prevents anyone who has committed a felony from ever voting again, a full 21% of African American adults in Florida are ineligible to vote. With Democrats in the state legislature, we can reverse these anti-democratic voting laws.

Why Miami-Dade

Florida’s 40th State Senate District is a part of Miami-Dade county. In the past, this largely Cuban-American district has typically supported Republicans. But the district is trending blue: in 2016, Hillary Clinton won the district by a resounding 17%.

As the Trump administration continues its attacks on healthcare, environmental protections, and undocumented people, Democrats have the chance to appeal to Florida voters on a range of crucial issues. The environment and climate change are especially important issues for Miami, as rising sea levels erode the coast and fracking pollutes drinking water.

To ensure fair districts in Florida, a strong safety net, and sensible climate protections, let’s get behind Annette Taddeo — a progressive voice for Miami. Get involved by spreading the word, donating, or volunteering. Let’s work together and flip a key seat in the Florida State Senate!
